🐾 How to Measure Your Pet for the Perfect Fit
Choosing the right size helps your dog stay comfortable, safe, and happy. Here’s a simple, step‑by‑step guide to get accurate measurements every time.
1. Chest (Girth) — The Most Important Measurement
This is the widest part of your dog’s body.
• Wrap a soft measuring tape around the rib cage, just behind the front legs
• Make sure the tape is snug but not tight
• This measurement determines the correct size for most harnesses and coats
Tip: If your dog is between sizes, always size up for comfort.
2. Neck
Measure where your dog’s collar naturally sits.
• Wrap the tape around the base of the neck
• Leave enough room to fit two fingers under the tape
• This ensures the harness or coat won’t rub or feel restrictive
3. Back Length
This is important for coats, sweaters, and some apparel.
• Have your dog stand naturally
• Measure from the base of the neck (where the collar sits)
• Down to the base of the tail
• Keep the tape straight along the spine
4. Weight (Optional but Helpful)
Some products use weight as a secondary guide.
• If your dog is close to the top of a size range, weight can help confirm the best fit
⭐ Pro Tips for Accurate Measuring
• Measure your dog while standing, not sitting
• Take each measurement twice to be sure
• If your dog is fluffy, measure with the tape against the body, not over the fur
• When in doubt, size up — comfort matters more than a tight fit

With 3 inches of reflective webbing and the buckles, your dog will enjoy an extra 5 inches in the girth area for a more comfortable fit for broad-chested dog breeds. Our Chest Strap Extension comes in two sizes to cover all of our Alpine coats from XS through 5XL. For even more room, multiple straps can be used together. Sold individually.
For XS - XL Coats - 3" long webbing (5" total extension with buckles) x 5/8" wide
For 2XL - 5XL Coats - 3" long webbing (5" total extension with buckles) x 1" wide
** Please note, while the smaller strap will work with our old Alpine coats, the larger strap will not. We have made adjustments to the buckle on our Alpine coats starting in 2021 and the old buckles are not compatible.
